A Note From Codi About Her Summer Plans:

I just finalized my teacher training!
I am soooo excited to have booked my plane ticket to go and study with Bill Evans! I got to study with him last year for 1 week and have been chosen to attend his two week intensive in new York. I get to spend 2 weeks in New York training! Whooohoooo!

For those of you who don't know Bill, here is some information about him:

Bill Evans and Don Halquist have devoted much of their professional lives to
developing educational methods and materials that allow dancers of all ages to become
healthier, more articulate, more expressive and more well-rounded artists and human
beings. They have specialized in working with aspiring professional performers, teachers
and future teachers. They have developed methodologies and materials to help all dancers become or prepare to become more effective, fulfilled and confident teachers of dance technique and other
dance studies. The Bill Evans Dancers’ and Teachers’ Intensive provides a learning
environment that generates trust, self-esteem, peer support and physical, mental and
spiritual regeneration.

"Bill is one of the best teachers in America. He has a fluent, lovely
understanding of movement which he conveys very well. He has
enormous loyalty and everywhere he goes to teach, people
come flocking."
Daniel Nagrin, Dance Teacher Now

"Evans has devoted his life to developing his own technique. Students from all
over the country flock to Evans to understand his way of moving, which
integrates his intensive study of kinesiology and anatomy with training in ballet,
jazz, tap and modern. His work... lives and breathes at the literally hundreds of
schools, studios, universities, colleges, high schools and companies where
Evans has taught, performed and choreographed." -- Susie Eley, Dance Teacher

A Note from Hayley About Her Summer Plans

What, Where, When:

This summer I am embarking on my greatest adventure, an 11 week back pack trip through South East Asia. I will be travelling to 5 different countries and in 4 of them I will be studying various genres of dance. In Indonesia I will be taking Balinese lessons, in Thailand Contemporary, in Vietnam Ballet and Hip Hop in the Philippines.

Why:

I truly feel that a dancer must be well rounded to truly excel in this time of dance because so many styles are
seen running through out other forms of dancing. For instance you see lots many elements of Hip Hop in Tap or Contemporary which is why I am excited to do a 2 week workshop in the Philippines with Brewing Point Dance Studios. Check them out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=traMmnJYLL0&feature=related

How will I use this:

Dance is like a meandering stream that will always continue to extend, each new course is a new "style". Some styles dies away while others converge in to new styles. It is our job as teachers to be constantly training and exposing our selves to new approaches and techniques. From our studies we can then decide what works and what doesn't. Some things will work for certain students and others need adjustments but with out the exposure to other classes it is hard to learn solutions to suit everybody. Dance technique is a science and with current information I can share my knowledge with my students.

Vocational Exam Results:

Hayley received DISTINCTION on her Royal Academy of Dancing Intermediate vocational exam. This is the highest achievable award and speaks volumes to her ability to be able to train, study, focus and learn! It also speaks to her teachers Codi and Mariah-Jane.

In Codi's words: "I have to admit teaching Hayley was easy to teach as she knows how to learn. She is committed to understanding, implementing the new found knowledge across the board and then practicing and practicing! Great job! Now onto Advanced work! This speaks to my growth as a teacher also AS I have never before had a student reach such a high level of achievement on such a difficult exam."

Thank you Hayley for working with us!

Mariah-Jane's Summer Plans

Mariah-Jane has an exciting summer planned for 2010. While she is already certified with Bill Evans she simply cannot resist another opportunity to learn from the living legend himself, now in his 70th year! Mariah-Jane will be traveling with Codi to New York to participate in the 2 week teachers intensive, covering Modern, Ballet, Laban, Composition, Feldenkrais, Pedagogy and Multiple Intelligences. After New York, she will be following Bill to his next seminar taking place in Fort Worth, Texas. At this week long event she will be one of the filmed dancers charting Bill's entire body of work as a legacy. Mariah-Jane is beyond honoured to be able to part of such an important event capturing the ideas and principles of a true dance pioneer and a man who changed the course of her life.

After 3 weeks of intensive dance training Mariah-Jane will get to enjoy a personal development course, focusing on energy and intuition and clarity of life purpose. After such a long passage of continual change in her personal and professional life, Mariah-Jane is very much looking forwards to some time of reflection, especially before the very busy summer school schedule of August leading right into working with the new location of Soul Funktion Dance Studio in September.

The first weekend of August will be another interesting and complimentary course; Brain Gym 201. She has already taken the week long course in Brain Gym 101 and is very keen to add greater layers that she can include into Brain Dance seminars and classes, aiding students with a multitude of skills through a some handy "tricks".

For 3 weeks in August Mariah-Jane will be working full time in Whistler and Pemberton through several summer schools including Princess Camp, Glee Camp and RAD ballet intensives.
